Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) survey in mid-2020 showed that 94.69 percent of SME sales experienced a decline due to the Covid-19 pandemic. No exception for SMEs engaged in the culinary sector.

Social media is an opportunity for SMEs to reach more potential consumers without being limited by space and time. Instagram is a popular social media that is often used to sell culinary

As quoted from aofund.org, Instagram is very appropriate to use for visual-based businesses, one of which is food. With a variety of features on Instagram, SMEs can upload eye-catching photos and videos that can attract the attention of netizens.

Instagram is in the third position most used by Indonesian citizens after Youtube and Whatsapp, so that it becomes the right social media to be used to promote the businesses of SMEs, accompanying long-lasting content on the internet Youtube and a brief conversation at Whatsapp.

“Hopefully what will be shared today can be useful and help SMEs to increase sales promotion of their culinary products,” said a lecturer at Mercu Buana University, Yoyoh Hereyah in an official broadcast, Sunday (15/8/2021).

He said it is hoped that SMEs can find out the various features available on Instagram, how to create creative content, and tips for making interesting captions for every content uploaded on Instagram. Various features to choose from, from Post, Insta Story, IG TV, to Reels.

In addition, to be able to produce creative content, you can use applications such as Canva, Vsco, Lightroom, and CapCut. Meanwhile, in compiling interesting captions, it is necessary to identify the target market and brand personality first, before making structures in the form of sentences, emojis (if any), mentions (if any), and hashtags.

The main goal to be achieved is to optimize the use of Instagram through shared information to increase SME sales during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, a community empowerment activity (Social Volunteering) which will discuss “Utilizing Instagram in Increasing Sales of Culinary SMEs during the Covid-19 Pandemic” was held online by the Master of Communication Studies at Mercu Buana University (UMB) on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

The activity is carried out in order to support the progress of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the culinary sector which is facing challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic by utilizing social media.

On the other hand, Social Volunteering is a form of Mercu Buana University’s concern for the surrounding community.
