Jokowi Says Demand for Porang in Export Market is Increasing

GemasulawesiPresident Jokowi said that the demand for porang in the export market is increasing. This tuber industry has a very large value and is wide open to be worked on in the country.

The demand for porang in the Export Market has increased, plus the commodity can also be made into various types of preparations such as noodles, rice, kwetiau, meatballs, sausages, ice cream, and others.

Therefore, Jokowi hopes that the porang industry in Indonesia can export processed porang so that the selling value of the product will be higher.

“We hope we won’t export porang in raw form, but as we saw earlier here, it’s already half-finished. This can be turned into flour and God willing, next year it will be finished goods, into porang rice,” he said.

Jokowi also asked the Minister of Agriculture (Mentan), Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) to continue to develop the porang industry from upstream to downstream. That’s because the demand for porang in the Export Market is increasing.

Ministry of Agriculture is committed to developing the porang industry in Indonesia

Minister of Agriculture SYL also stated that he and his staff are committed to continuing to develop the country’s porang industry.

“There are two choices, Mr. President, to be maximally encouraged, including the commodity of porang and the second is swallow’s nest. Today, of course, as the President hopes, we will develop porang cultivation,” said SYL.

SYL said that the price of porang in the market is currently high. In fact, the price of porang shiratake rice is priced at more than IDR 200,000 per kg.

“The price of porang is good now, but we must not depend on exports. Therefore, processing porang derivative products must be done in Indonesia,” he said.

Porang will be the food of the future

Jokowi said porang would be a substitute for rice in the future. In fact, currently the demand for porang in the Export Market is increasing.

He conveyed this when he visited the porang tuber processing plant, PT Asian Prima Konjac, in Madiun City, East Java (East Java), Thursday 19 August 2021.

“Porang will be the food of the future because it is low in calories, low in carbohydrates, and also low in sugar content,” said Jokowi.

“I think it will be healthy food in the future. It can also be a healthier substitute for rice, because the sugar content is very low,” he said.

Based on his visit report, Jokowi explained that one hectare of land can produce 15 to 20 tons of porang.

“I asked how many tons of porang per hectare can produce, I was told that one hectare (ha) can produce 15 to 20 tons,” he said.

Jokowi added that the porang harvest in the first planting season could reach IDR 40,000,000 within eight months. (**)
