Visiting Porang Processing Factory in Madiun, President Jokowi Asks to Make Porang an Export Commodity

President Joko Widodo visits the porang processing factory, PT Asia Prima Konjac, in Madiun Regency, Thursday (19/8/2021)

East Java Newsroom – President Joko Widodo instructed the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo to make porang a new mainstay export commodity in the country. The instruction was conveyed by the Head of State while visiting the porang processing factory owned by PT Asia Prima Konjac during his working visit to Madiun Regency, East Java Province, Thursday (19/8/2021).

“I have already conveyed to the Minister of Agriculture that we are really serious about this new commodity, the porang commodity,” said the President.

According to President Jokowi, porang is a new commodity that can provide good added value, not only for porang processing companies but also for porang farmers.

Based on the data he received, one hectare of land can produce 15 to 20 tons of porang. In addition, in the first planting season, farmers can produce up to IDR 40 million porang in 8 months.

“This is a very large value, the market is still wide open,” he said.

President Jokowi also believes that porang will be a healthy food in the future considering that porang has very beneficial ingredients for the human body. Starting from low calorie to sugar free.

“This can also be a healthier substitute for rice because the sugar content is very low,” said the President.

President Jokowi also hopes that this porang commodity can be exported not only in the form of raw and semi-finished goods, but also in the form of porang rice.

“God willing, next year it will become a finished product, namely porang rice,” he added.

During the visit, President Jokowi also held a groundbreaking for the expansion of the PT Asia Prima Konjac factory as well as reviewing the process of processing porang from raw goods into semi-finished goods. President Jokowi also took the time to have a dialogue with several representatives of porang farmers.

To note, porang or in Latin called Amorphopallus muelleri blume is a type of tuber plant that contains glucomannan carbohydrates or sugars in complex form.

Porang is usually processed into rice, shirataki, mixed ingredients in cake products, bread, ice cream, candy, jelly, jam, and thickener in syrup products. Porang is also often processed as a cosmetic product.

Accompanying President Jokowi in this activity were Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo, Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, and President Director of PT Asia Prima Konjac Pin Haris.(non)
